How to use this calculator
- Enter the qualified tips you received during the year — the total on your pay stubs, Form W-2 or tip records.
- Choose the tax year and filing status, and enter your adjusted gross income (tips included).
- Confirm your occupation qualifies.
- Read the result: the deduction after the cap and phase-out, and the federal tax you save.
What counts as qualified tips
- Voluntary payments the customer chose to make, in any amount they decided.
- Paid in cash, by card or by check, including tips distributed through a tip pool.
- Earned in an occupation that customarily and regularly received tips on or before December 31, 2024.
- Not mandatory service charges, negotiated fees or amounts the customer couldn’t decline.
- Reported on a Form W-2, 1099 or Form 4137 so they’re documented.
The $25,000 cap and phase-out
| Filing status | Maximum deduction | Phase-out begins (MAGI) |
|---|---|---|
| Married filing jointly | $25,000 per return | $300,000 |
| Single / head of household | $25,000 | $150,000 |
| Married filing separately | Not eligible | |
The deduction falls by $100 for each $1,000 of modified AGI above the threshold.
Worked examples
Server, single, $48,000 AGI including $18,000 of tips (2026). Income is well under $150,000, so the full $18,000 is deductible. Taxable income falls from $31,900 to $13,900 — all in the 12% bracket — saving about $2,160.
Single filer with $165,500 of MAGI and $18,000 of tips. MAGI is $15,500 over the threshold, so the deduction drops by 15 × $100 = $1,500, to $16,500.
Self-employed and gig workers
Self-employed people in qualifying tipped occupations — such as rideshare drivers, delivery workers or independent hairstylists — can also claim the deduction. For them, the deduction can’t exceed the net income from the business that earned the tips, and some specified service businesses are excluded. Keep records of tips separately from fares or fees.
How the calculator works
We use the 2025 or 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction. The result excludes credits, payroll taxes and state income taxes. It’s an estimate for planning, not tax advice.
